Find An Activity That You ENJOY!
Many clients and friends have told me over the years that they just do not like to exercise. It takes them out of their comfort zone, they get sweaty, and it’s hard. I’ve heard it all. If the idea of participating in a regular exercise routine leaves you feeling like you have one more chore to complete, or you’d rather do just about anything else on earth, read on.
If you’re going to make a change and create a new habit for yourself, why not make it fun? Think about your childhood. Embrace your inner child. Every kid loves to run and play, swim, ride their bike, play tag, etc.
Take your bike out for a spin around the block. If you need to spend some time getting it in working order again, plan the next weekend and do it. Or invite a friend over who could do it for you. Make them a healthy lunch and plan a time when the 2 of you could go for a ride together!
Go for a walk. Walking is something that nearly anyone can do. It is easy, you can walk nearly anywhere, and best of all, IT’S FREE! The only equipment you need is a comfortable pair of shoes. Start small with a short walk to the end of the block and back. Once you’re comfortable with that distance, walk around the block. Stay close to home to begin with and add distance as you feel stronger. Make it a family event, or invite a friend to walk around the neighborhood with you before or after dinner.
Take a swim. If lofty gym fees deter you, search out a local rec center or YMCA where you can purchase an affordable punch pass. Inquire about the open swim times, strap on your goggles (or swim floatie) and go! If open swim times aren’t your thing, join a water aerobics class. These establishments offer many different types of classes throughout the day. Find one that suits you and give it a try.
Other ideas: Join a walking golf league, find a tennis partner, join an open gym basketball league, volleyball league, play racquetball, dance, roller-skate, go skiing, hiking, anything that you enjoy that will keep you moving.
Whatever you do, start making it a part of your daily routine. If you can’t do it daily, try every other day. The more fun you have doing your activity, the more likely you are to stick to it. Forget about exact time limits or that you may not be doing enough. Just get out and do it. Enjoy yourself and have fun!
Try making it a regular part of your routine for 2 weeks. Keep a log on how you felt before vs how you felt after, and even how you felt at the end of the day. Chances are you’ll start to feel better emotionally and physically. Who knows? You may start to actually ENJOY this exercise thing!
If you still can’t think of anything, or are unsure of what you can do safely, seek out a fitness professional to help you plan a safe, enjoyable program that’s designed just for you.
